Rotary Convention 2006, Copenhagen, Denmark

In april the danish LEGO klub Byggepladen.dk, which I am a member of, were contacted by LEGO. They asked if we could find 4 volunteer, to create a large mosaic of the famous danish writer H.C. Andersen, on a Rotary Convention in June.
Of course everybody were interested in that, so the 4 volunteer were found in a very short time, and I was lucky to get one of the 4 seats.

Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 32,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

The Convention

The job was to built a mosaic of H. C. Andersen on an already prepared frame, created by the LEGO Group. The frame was equipped with 35 transparent 48 x 48 building plates with the image printed on the back, so it was possible to see through and see which color of bricks you should use. The plates were attached to the frame with velcro, to make it easy to put up and down.
The mosaic were built of 2x2 bricks in 5 colors, black, brown, dark gray, light gray, and yellow (tan). A total of 20.160 bricks.

We were four participants, and the mosaic had to be built once everyday, that means 6 times. We switched to be 2 participants each day, that means 3 days to each member, 3 times 10.000 bricks, that is easy to feal in your fingers:-)

Besides from building the picture we had the pleasure to talk to a lot of the visitors to the convention. They were also very welcome to join the building of the mosaic, and a lot of visitors couldn't say no to that offer, here are a few pictures.

In the last days of the convention, we got a lot of help building the mosaic, so we had some extra time for builing other stuf. A lot of kids also joined us and enjoyed builing with all those extra bricks. Here are some of the creations, made after the 'work' was done.

A last comment to the event; I think it has been a very cosy event, besides from all the LEGO, I have had the chance to talk to a lot of very nice people from all around the world.
If a similar offer should come up, I am sure all of us would say yes again.
